Michael Fassbender stars in the big-screen adaption of a beloved video game, but it's real-life action that has his heart.

"Michael is extraordinary [at paintball]," his Assassin's Creed director Justin Kurzel told TheFIX. "He's the winner of everything: go-karting, paintballing. It's kind of sick how good he is at things."

The 39-year-old Irish actor wins at being humble, too.

"I wasn't that good," Michael replied when we relayed the praise. " If Justin says that he's being very kind. But I love it, it's so much fun.

"We got to do it in one of the towns from the spaghetti westerns [Almeria, Spain], so we got to take over the town and have this shootout. The Saloon was the HQ, which got sort of dangerous because there was alcohol involved - not a good idea to paintball with alcohol, of course - but it happened."

(Co-star Marion Cotillard, 41, skipped out on their wild-west outing.)

And this isn't the first time Michael's questionable paintball tactics have received glowing adoration.

"The whole [12 Years A Slave cast] went one Saturday," Chiwetel Ejiofor told Conan in 2015. "Michael was cheating. If you get hit, you put your hands up and then walk through the course…

"So, Michael - he's a smart guy - he'd just put his hands up and then walk through the course and shoot all of the enemy combatants."

Watch the video above to hear Marion discuss "nerds" and her personal time travel ambitions.

Assassin's Creed is in Australian cinemas on January 1.
