Kim Cattrall on Politics and Turning 60: 'Samantha Jones Would Be Campaigning Like Hell for Hillary Clinton'
Ahead of her visit to Australia as the ambassador of Specsavers' Spectacle Wearer of the Year, Sex and the City alum Kim Cattrall chatted exclusively with TheFIX's Ashley Spencer about fashion, turning 60, and the fate of Samantha Jones.
You've been wearing glasses since you were 10 years old. How important are they to your personal style?
I've always felt very attached to wearing glasses because it's my choice. It's a practical choice because I want to see, of course, but it's also a fashion choice.
I've gone from the cat-eye look to the John Lennon look to the Annie Hall look. And I kept the glasses I wore on Sex and the City. They all reflect who I am in my life as a girl, as a young woman, as a woman, and now as a woman in my 60s.
Speaking of that, Happy Belated! How does it feel?
I am feeling fantastic. I really am. I feel really relaxed, really happy. As a now-certified sexagenarian, I wake feeling the same as I always have: hoping for the best, shouldering the worst, appreciating what is, and remaining curious.
The biggest shift is I've finally begun to meditate. I've been taking 15 minutes a day to sit and quiet my mind. A lot comes up. Becoming comfortable as an observer can be daunting at first, but I'm giving it a go. I'll keep you posted. As always, I'm a work in progress.
Your series Sensitive Skin [available on Netflix in Australia] is profound in how it treats women and aging. Are you surprised Hollywood is still so sexist and ageist?
Yes, it's everywhere. It's sad in many ways because I don't think a lot of men have to endure the vigorous objectification that women do.
But I believe that things are changing. I couldn't have played a character turning 50 in a movie and celebrating it as we did in Sex and the City, and I couldn't have gotten Sensitive Skin made otherwise.
I think people are realising that to be in your 50 and 60s, you can still be confident and have a tremendous amount of style. You have survived so much in your life, and you want so very much to continue to grow and challenge yourself, and that's what so many women of my generation have always done.
How would your Sex and the City character feel about everything going on in 2016?
Samantha Jones would be out there campaigning like hell for Hillary Clinton! [laughs] And doing it with a lot of style and confidence and swagger. The world is a bit crazy right now, and it's scary times. But I feel that level heads will prevail. I have faith in that.
What are you most looking forward to on your visit to Australia?
I very much enjoy the Australian wines, especially the white wines.
