For Tom CruiseThe Mummy is a dream come true.

In the new imagining of classic monster tale, Tom stars as hero Nick opposite Russell Crowe's complex Dr. Jekyll, marking the first time the two Hollywood legends have ever worked together on-screen.

"I was really excited when he said that he would come on board to do this," Tom told TheFIX at The Mummy's Sydney premiere on May 22. "He and I, we're staring at each other because we talked about it forever and, you know, he was always working and I'm just doing other things.

"For me, working on this was a dream. If Russell decided he wanted to do it, then I was really excited about it."

The 54-year-old's excitement carries over to a dramatic fight scene between he and Russell in the action flick.

"Both of us were like, 'This has got to be epic,'" Tom says. "We had a lot of fun [beating each other up]."

And while Russell told us that Tom has "a lot of stamina" and would likely win a real-life fisticuffs between the two, Tom took a humble sidestep around answering that question.

"Come on, we'll never fight!" Tom grinned. "We're friends."

He played it equally cool when quizzed on a particular scene in The Mummy that sees him stripped nude (with only certain bits strategically covered).

Asked if baring his fit physique was daunting, he took a long pause then said simply, "No."

"No, no, you just do it," he added with a laugh.

The Mummy is in Australian cinemas on June 5.
